Concept and Nature of Stress
Stress refers to a state of psychological and physiological activation that occurs when an individual perceives that the demands of a situation exceed, or may exceed, the resources available to manage those demands. Stress is therefore not determined exclusively by an external event. It is also influenced by how the individual interprets the event and evaluates the ability to cope with it.
A stressor is an internal or external condition that has the potential to produce a stress response. Stressors may include academic deadlines, occupational workload, financial difficulties, interpersonal conflicts, major life changes and environmental conditions.
Stress may be classified into the following forms:
- Eustress refers to a form of stress associated with challenge, motivation and adaptive performance. A moderate level of challenge may increase alertness and encourage an individual to mobilise resources towards achieving a goal.
- Distress refers to stress that is perceived as excessive, uncontrollable or difficult to manage. Persistent distress may interfere with psychological functioning, physical health and everyday activities.
- Acute stress refers to a short-term response to an immediate or specific demand. It may occur before an examination, presentation, interview or other significant event.
- Chronic stress refers to stress that persists over a prolonged period because of continuing or repeated demands. Prolonged exposure to stress may have cumulative effects on physical and psychological functioning.
Theories and Models of Stress
Theories and models of stress explain how individuals respond to stressful conditions and why similar situations may produce different responses in different individuals.
1 Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome
Hans Selye developed the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) to explain the body's general physiological response to prolonged stress. The model proposes that the body attempts to maintain physiological stability when exposed to a stressor. Selye identified three sequential stages: alarm, resistance and exhaustion.
1. Alarm Stage
- The alarm stage represents the body's immediate response to the recognition of a stressor. The individual experiences physiological activation that prepares the body to respond to a perceived threat or demand.
- This stage is commonly associated with the activation of the body's stress-response mechanisms. Changes such as increased heart rate, heightened alertness and increased muscular readiness may occur.

2. Resistance Stage
- The resistance stage occurs when exposure to the stressor continues after the initial alarm response. The body attempts to adapt to the continuing demand and maintain functioning.
- During this stage, the individual may appear to function relatively normally despite continued physiological activation. However, maintaining this state for an extended period requires considerable physiological resources.
- The resistance stage illustrates that adaptation to stress is not necessarily equivalent to the absence of stress. An individual may continue performing daily activities while remaining exposed to sustained stress.
3. Exhaustion Stage
- The exhaustion stage may occur when prolonged exposure to stress reduces the individual's capacity to maintain adaptation. The physiological resources required for continued resistance may become depleted.
- Persistent stress at this stage may be associated with fatigue, reduced functioning and increased vulnerability to physical and psychological difficulties.
- The model therefore highlights the potential consequences of prolonged stress exposure. It also demonstrates the importance of recovery and effective stress management.

2 Lazarus and Folkman’s Transactional Model of Stress and Coping
Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Model of Stress and Coping provides a psychological explanation of stress by emphasising the interaction between the individual and the environment. According to this model, stress depends significantly on how a person appraises a situation and evaluates available coping resources.
Primary Appraisal
- Primary appraisal involves evaluating whether a particular situation has significance for the individual's well-being.
- A situation may be appraised as irrelevant, positive or stressful. A stressful situation may be perceived as involving harm or loss, threat or challenge.
- The same external event may therefore produce different levels of stress in different individuals because individuals may interpret its significance differently.
Secondary Appraisal
- Secondary appraisal involves evaluating whether adequate resources and coping options are available to manage the perceived demand.
- The individual may consider personal abilities, knowledge, social support, financial resources, time and other available forms of assistance.
- Stress is likely to be greater when perceived demands are high and perceived coping resources are inadequate.
Coping
- Coping refers to the cognitive and behavioural efforts used to manage demands that are perceived as stressful.
- Problem-focused coping attempts to modify or address the source of stress through actions such as planning, information gathering and problem-solving.
- Emotion-focused coping attempts to regulate the emotional response to stress through strategies such as relaxation, emotional expression and seeking social support.
- The model emphasises that coping is dynamic and may change as the situation and the individual's appraisal of it change.
Causes and Sources of Stress
Stress can originate from multiple areas of life. Major sources include:
- Personal and psychological factors can create stress when individuals experience unrealistic expectations, fear of failure, low perceived control, uncertainty or major personal changes.
- Academic and occupational demands can generate stress through excessive workload, deadlines, performance expectations, role ambiguity, job insecurity and workplace conflict.
- Family and interpersonal conditions can produce stress through relationship difficulties, communication problems, family responsibilities and interpersonal conflict.
- Financial and environmental conditions can contribute to stress through economic uncertainty, debt, housing difficulties, environmental disturbances and major changes in living circumstances.
- Technological and information-related demands can contribute to stress through continuous digital connectivity, information overload, frequent online communication and difficulty separating professional and personal activities.

Stress can influence physiological, psychological, cognitive and behavioural functioning.
- Physiological effects may include increased heart rate, muscle tension, fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches and changes in appetite.
- Psychological and emotional effects may include irritability, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, reduced psychological well-being and difficulty relaxing.
- Cognitive effects may include reduced concentration, repetitive or negative thinking, difficulty in decision-making and impaired attention.
- Behavioural effects may include withdrawal, procrastination, reduced productivity and changes in eating, sleeping or other daily routines.
Stress Assessment and Coping
Effective stress management begins with systematic identification of stressors and recognition of individual responses.
- Physical responses should be identified through changes such as fatigue, muscle tension, sleep disturbances and other bodily symptoms.
- Emotional responses should be examined through experiences such as irritability, anxiety, frustration and emotional exhaustion.
- Cognitive responses should be assessed through persistent worrying, negative thinking, difficulty concentrating and problems with decision-making.
- Behavioural responses should be examined through changes in productivity, social interaction, eating patterns, sleep routines and task completion.
Coping strategies may be broadly classified into problem-focused and emotion-focused approaches. Problem-focused coping is generally appropriate when the stressor can be modified, whereas emotion-focused coping may be useful when the situation cannot be immediately changed. Avoidance may provide temporary relief but can become maladaptive when it prevents appropriate action.
Strategies for Effective Stress Management
Effective stress management involves reducing unnecessary stressors, strengthening coping resources and improving adaptive responses.
- Time management can reduce avoidable stress by helping individuals establish priorities, allocate sufficient time and divide complex tasks into manageable activities.
- Problem-solving can reduce stress by identifying the source of a problem and developing practical alternatives for addressing it.
- Relaxation and controlled-breathing techniques may assist in reducing physiological arousal associated with stress.
- Mindfulness-based practices can improve awareness of present experiences and reduce excessive preoccupation with past or anticipated events.
- Regular physical activity, adequate sleep and balanced nutrition can support physical and psychological resilience.
- Social support can provide emotional assistance, practical resources and alternative perspectives during stressful situations.
- Cognitive strategies can help individuals examine unrealistic or unhelpful interpretations and develop more balanced evaluations of stressful situations.
Stress-management strategies should be selected according to the nature, intensity, duration and controllability of the stressor.
Developing a Personal Stress-Management Plan
A personal stress-management plan provides a systematic framework for identifying and managing recurring stress.
